Dollar continues its rise in Cuba: Will it reach 800 pesos?

The U.S. dollar remains very close to the barrier of 800 Cuban pesos in the informal currency market, following a sharp increase in recent weeks that has pushed it up to 785 CUP.

At 10:00 a.m. this Sunday, places the dollar at 785 CUP, with purchase references at 780 CUP and sale references at 790 CUP.

Although this Sunday remains unchanged compared to the previous day, recent behavior keeps attention on the possibility of it soon reaching 800 CUP, a barrier from which it is currently only 15 pesos away.

Seven days ago, the dollar was at 741 CUP, which means it has increased by 44 pesos in a week, equivalent to approximately 5.9 %.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The rise becomes even more pronounced when extending the comparison to 30 days: it was priced at 683 CUP, which is 102.5 pesos less than this Sunday.

The euro is also on an upward trajectory and this Sunday reaches 885 CUP, with buying references at 870 CUP and selling references at 900 CUP.

The European currency has risen by 5.5 pesos compared to the 880 CUP of the previous day, and it has accumulated an increase of 43 pesos over the past week when it was at 842 CUP. Currently, the euro exceeds the dollar by 100 pesos.

For its part, the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) is around 475 CUP, with a buying reference of 455 CUP and a selling reference of 494 CUP.

Compared to the previous day, it increased by 7.00 pesos, from 468 CUP, although it remains 8.5 pesos below the 483.5 CUP recorded a week ago.

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba, corresponding to Segment III, is set this October 4th at 695 CUP per dollar and 783 CUP per euro, still below the rates of the informal market.

The difference reaches 90 pesos in the case of the dollar and 102 pesos for the euro, reflecting the gap that remains between the official rates and the prices at which currencies are traded among individuals.
