PortMiami has broken an unprecedented barrier in its history by exceeding for the first time 10 million cruise passengers in a single fiscal year, solidifying the rapid growth of one of Miami-Dade's most important industries.

The port officially announced that it welcomed its 10 millionth passenger on September 14, 2026.

The most significant aspect is that the milestone was achieved when there were still about two weeks left to conclude the fiscal year 2026, which ran from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026.

By then, PortMiami had already greatly surpassed the previous record of 8,564,225 passengers set during the entire fiscal year 2025.

More than 1.4 million passengers above the previous record

By reaching 10 million before the fiscal year-end, PortMiami had already accumulated at least 1.43 million more passengers than during the entire previous year.

This represents an increase of nearly 17% over the record from 2025, even without accounting for the traffic recorded during the last two weeks of September.

The previous record had already represented a historic high.

In fiscal year 2025, PortMiami welcomed 8,564,225 passengers, compared to 8,233,056 in 2024, representing a year-over-year increase of 4.02%.

Now, the leap above 10 million places the port at an unprecedented level of activity.

This is how cruise traffic in Miami has grown

The historical figures of PortMiami highlight the extent of the growth.

  • 2019: 6,823,817 passengers.

  • 2021: 252,099 passengers, during the severe impact of the pandemic.

  • 2022: 4,022,544 passengers.

  • 2023: 7,299,294 passengers.

  • 2024: 8,233,056 passengers.

  • 2025: 8,564,225 passengers.

  • 2026: more than 10 million before the end of September.

In just four years, the recorded volume increased from just over four million in 2022 to more than ten million in 2026.

The historical record of PortMiami shows a very rapid recovery following the drop caused by the pandemic and a subsequent series of record achievements.

What is driving the record?

PortMiami attributes the growth to a combination of increased demand for cruises departing from Miami, investments in new terminals, and an ever-expanding range of ships and companies.

The port has developed infrastructure in recent years to accommodate some of the largest passenger ships in the world, while the major shipping companies continue to use Miami as their home port.

On October 1, just a day after the end of the fiscal year, PortMiami also announced a new lineup of ships for the 2026-2027 cruise season, indicating that the expansion of offerings will continue during the new period.

A port increasingly important to Miami's economy

The growth of cruise ships has effects that extend far beyond the terminals themselves.

Passengers who start or end their journeys in Miami generate activity for hotels, restaurants, ground transportation, commerce, airlines, and other tourist services.

An economic assessment commissioned by PortMiami estimated that the total operations of the port generate $61.4 billion in annual economic activity.

The study also attributed to activities at PortMiami the support of 340,078 jobs and the generation of approximately 2.2 billion dollars in state and local taxes.

These figures refer to the overall port activity —including cruises and cargo— and not exclusively to the cruise industry.

Miami is preparing more infrastructure to accommodate passengers

The growth also increases the pressure on the roads and transportation systems that connect PortMiami with the rest of the county.

CiberCuba reported in May that Miami-Dade is studying the creation of a direct rail connection between Miami International Airport and PortMiami that could complete the journey in less than 30 minutes.

The study analyzes valued alternatives between 600 and 800 million dollars and proposes a nonstop connection between two of the most important transportation infrastructures in South Florida.

The project becomes increasingly relevant as the number of passengers arriving by plane in Miami to begin a cruise grows, and they subsequently need to transfer to the port.

New terminals for increasingly larger ships

The expansion of PortMiami has been accompanied by investments in new terminals and expansions of existing facilities.

In recent years, companies such as Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival, and Virgin Voyages have strengthened their presence in the port.

The strategy aims to increase the available capacity to simultaneously accommodate large ships and process the growing flow of passengers more quickly.

This infrastructure is particularly important on days of high activity when several cruise ships can disembark and embark thousands of people within a few hours.

The final total for 2026 is still pending

There is an important detail to consider when interpreting the figure.

The 10 million is not yet the final balance for the fiscal year 2026.

PortMiami reached that figure on September 14, when there were still more than two weeks of operations left before the end of the fiscal period on September 30.

As of October 5th, the port had still not published in its official news section the final balance of total passengers for the entire fiscal year 2026.

Therefore, the final figure should be higher than 10 million, but it is incorrect to anticipate a number until PortMiami officially publishes the statistical closure of the fiscal year.

From 8.56 million to over 10 million in just one year

Regardless of what the exact figure turns out to be, the new record represents a significant leap.

PortMiami went from 8.56 million passengers in 2025 to exceeding 10 million before the end of 2026.

The growth strengthens the role of cruise ships within Miami's tourism economy and simultaneously increases the need to expand terminals, roads, and transportation connections around the port.
