A 26-year-old man was arrested this Tuesday in Miami after his own wife alerted the police upon discovering hidden child sexual abuse material on her partner's cell phone, according to local news.
The detainee, identified as Leonel Orozco, a Colombian citizen residing in the Allapattah neighborhood, remains in jail both due to criminal charges and a migration hold imposed by federal authorities. It all began when the woman checked her partner's device and found content that immediately alarmed her.
The detectives from the Miami Police Department took a sworn statement from the wife, who explained that she had found a hidden folder on the cellphone containing suspicious videos and digitally manipulated images of two minors.
"The woman indicated that both images had been altered to display nudity of the minors," the police document states according to Telemundo 51.
The minor confirms the manipulation
The researchers also interviewed one of the girls who appeared in the altered photographs.
The minor stated that the original image was taken during a family gathering and that she had not authorized its alteration to simulate nudity, the report indicated.
The interrogation and inspection of the phone
After collecting those testimonies, the investigators confronted Orozco, read him his Miranda rights, and he agreed to answer questions without the presence of a lawyer.
In addition, he signed a consent form for the officers to review his phone.
During that inspection, according to the report from Local 10, investigators discovered five videos classified as child sexual abuse material under Florida law, with victims aged between five and seven years old.
The police report included a statement from the accused himself, although that section was redacted in the publicly released version.
The charges and the appearance before the judge
This Thursday, Orozco appeared before Judge Mindy Glazer of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in a Miami-Dade court.
The judge found probable cause and set a total bail of 10,000 for seven charges: five related to possession of child sexual abuse materials and two for promoting an altered sexual representation without consent.
Under Florida Statute § 827.071, each image or video may constitute a separate charge.
Simple possession is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years per charge.
Orozco remains detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) in Miami-Dade.
Immigration detention means that, even if Orozco paid the bail set by the court, he could be transferred to federal custody to begin a deportation process to Colombia.
El caso incluye una retención migratoria de ICE contra el detenido. Para seguir de cerca este tipo de noticias y todo lo relacionado con las autoridades migratorias en Estados Unidos, visita nuestra sección de
