The Federal Trade Commission of the United States (FTC) announced a new distribution of funds to 6,205 consumers who purchased from GOAT, a platform for selling sneakers, apparel, and accessories, and were affected by shipping and refund practices questioned by the authorities. The total payments amount to over $100,000 and will be sent via checks by mail or transfers through PayPal.
The announcement, released on October 6, 2026, stems from an agreement reached in a federal case against the company. According to the official GOAT refund program page, this new distribution applies to eligible customers who paid for express shipping between 2020 and 2024 and did not receive a previous refund from the company.
This is not a government bonus for all buyers, nor an automatic refund for any purchase made on GOAT. The funds are allocated to identified consumers within the compensation process. The FTC has not announced a new general call for claims at this stage.
Who can receive refunds from GOAT?
The FTC explains that it is sending 6,205 payments to individuals deemed eligible who did not receive the corresponding funds in the first stage of refunds. These are buyers negatively affected by the shipping practices of the platform, particularly for having paid for expedited service that was not delivered within the promised timeframe.
In the FTC press release from October 6, the agency also recalled the allegations regarding its buyer protection policy: according to the lawsuit, some consumers who received incorrect items, allegedly inauthentic or different from what was described, encountered obstacles in obtaining the promised refunds.
People who have used GOAT during those years can review their purchase and communication history, but having made a purchase on the platform does not by itself prove that one is part of the beneficiary group. To verify whether a received payment is legitimate or to clarify a potential identification issue, the FTC refers to the designated administrator, JND Legal Administration.
How will the money arrive and how much time do I have to collect it?
Most consumers included in this new phase will receive a check by postal mail. Others will receive a notification to accept a payment via PayPal, according to the distribution system announced by the agency.
The deadlines vary depending on the payment method
If a check arrives: it must be cashed within the 90 days specified by the FTC. It's important to check the issue date and the instructions on the document itself before it expires.
If the money arrives via PayPal: the recipient must accept it within 30 days. It is recommended to verify the payment from the official PayPal app or website, without accessing suspicious links from emails or unexpected messages.
The FTC does not specify an equal amount for each beneficiary in the statement. The more than $100,000 refers to the total of this distribution, not to an individual amount. Therefore, it is incorrect to claim that each buyer will receive a specific sum or to divide the total among the recipients to present it as a guaranteed payment.
What happened with GOAT and why does it have to refund money?
The case dates back to a lawsuit filed by the FTC in December 2024 against 1661, Inc., the company that operates GOAT. The platform sells athletic shoes, clothing, and accessories, offering various shipping options, including expedited processing and delivery services.
The agency claimed that GOAT had not fulfilled its promises regarding shipping times for certain purchases. According to the official information about the 2024 agreement, 37% of orders classified as "Instant" were shipped later than promised, while more than 16% of "Next Day" orders were sent on the second day or later. Some buyers had paid between $14.50 and $25 extra for shipping upgrades, according to the complaint.
The FTC stated that the company did not adequately provide consumers the option to accept the delay or cancel the order with a prompt refund, as required by applicable U.S. regulations for mail, internet, or telephone sales.
The authorities also questioned the enforcement of guarantees for authenticity and buyer protection. According to the complaint, there were rejected claims, partial refunds, or credits to be spent within the platform itself when customers expected to get their money back. These behaviors were alleged by the FTC in the proceedings and led to a court settlement; they should not be presented as a ruling that has established the validity of each individual incident.
The company has already refunded over 736,000 dollars in 2025
The 2024 agreement included a financial obligation of over two million dollars, in addition to changes in customer service practices and adherence to business commitments.
In 2025, GOAT directly refunded more than $736,000 to affected consumers. The new phase announced in October 2026 is different: now the FTC is distributing an additional $100,000 among 6,205 eligible individuals who did not receive that previous refund.
The distinction is important because it does not mean that these 6,205 clients will receive the 736,000 dollars from 2025, nor that all previous buyers are entitled to a second payment. The agency specifically identifies those who are part of the current distribution.
How to verify if a check or message from the FTC is genuine
Authorities are warning about the risk of scammers taking advantage of legitimate refund programs to request upfront payments or steal personal data. The FTC never requires payment of fees or the provision of Social Security numbers or banking information to receive a refund from this program.
To avoid scams, it is advisable to go directly to ftc.gov/enforcement/refunds/goat-refunds, without using links received from unknown senders. There, you will find the case information, distribution method, and contact for the administrator.
Those who receive a supposed payment via PayPal can log in by manually entering paypal.com in the browser or by opening the official app. The FTC also provides a Spanish FAQ guide to help recognize legitimate payments and what to do when a check expires or there are doubts about its source.
The official phone number for the administrator JND Legal Administration for the GOAT case is 1-888-970-2410. Before providing information, verify the number on the FTC website and explain if you received a check, a PayPal notification, or if you need to verify communication related to the settlement.
Is it the same refund for Amazon Prime?
No. This is an independent compensation process. CiberCuba recently reported on the expansion of Amazon Prime refunds, a program separate from the FTC related to subscriptions and difficulties in canceling membership.
In the case of GOAT, the compensation arises from accusations regarding delayed shipments paid as priority and issues with protection and return policies. Each agreement has its own recipients, amounts, and procedures: having received money from another FTC program does not prove entitlement to a GOAT payment.
For consumers who have purchased shoes or accessories on this platform, it is essential to check any notifications on the official page, adhere to the 90 days for checks or 30 days for PayPal, and not pay intermediaries who promise to release the refund.
