A woman was arrested on Saturday by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office after allegedly setting a man on fire in the yard of the former Annie Coleman housing complex, in the northwest part of the county, as reported by CBS Miami.
The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the area of Northwest 63rd Street and 25th Avenue, when officers responded to a call and found an adult man unconscious with serious burns.
The victim was urgently transferred to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition.
The injuries are so severe that the man cannot speak, according to the agents present at the scene.
Authorities located a woman at the scene and placed her in custody, identifying her as responsible for the attack. Investigators are working to determine the relationship between the two and the motive behind the incident.
So far, the Sheriff's Office has not released the names or ages of the victim or the arrestee, and no formal charges have been publicly filed.
The site of the incident is a public property in the process of abandonment: the Annie Coleman complex was built in 1966 with 210 public housing units, but since 2019, the county has started relocating its residents due to safety issues and physical deterioration. In March of this year, its formal demolition was proposed.
The Ryder Trauma Center, where the victim of the fire attack is hospitalized, treats over 600 burn patients each year and has five ICU beds specifically for critical burn cases, making it the regional referral center for this type of injury.
The investigation into the attack is still open, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of filing charges once the proceedings are complete.
