The Cuban freediver Lemay Gutiérrez Álvarez won a gold medal and a silver medal in the master M1 category at the 2026 CMAS Open International Freediving Indoor Santa Marta, an international pool apnea tournament held from October 22 to 25 in Colombia.
The results have been reflected in the official event report, published this Sunday, which includes the performances of the competitors in the four pool disciplines included in the program of the competition held in Santa Marta.
The gold medal was won in the men's Dynamic Apnea with Fins (DYN) M1 event held on Sunday, the 25th. Gutiérrez Álvarez covered 179.5 meters without penalties and received a white card, which was enough to secure the top spot on the podium. Brazilian Rodrigo Macedo took second place with 153.5 meters, and Colombian Andrés Capera Borja came in third with 134.5 meters.
A day earlier, the Cuban competed in the dynamic apnea event with bi-fins (DYN-BF) for men's M1 and recorded 168.5 meters without penalties, also with a white card. On that occasion, it was Capera Borja who took first place with 174 meters—a mark that the official document notes as a master M1 record—while Macedo completed the podium with 152.5 meters.
Both distances correspond to meters traveled horizontally underwater on a single breath, not to depth. Category M1 groups athletes aged 50 to 54, according to the regulations of the World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS) for pool apnea, and has its own podium independent of the senior category.
The tournament was organized by the Colombian Federation of Underwater Activities (FEDECAS) with the endorsement of CMAS, and it brought together competitors from the junior, senior, and master categories in the disciplines of static apnea, dynamic apnea without fins, dynamic apnea with bifins, and dynamic apnea with fins. As it was an open international tournament—not a world championship—the records achieved can be validated as national, continental, or world records before CMAS.
Gutiérrez Álvarez, originally from Jaruco, Mayabeque, arrived at this competition with a solid international background. At the 2023 CMAS World Championship in Kuwait, he won two silver medals and set a Pan American record. The CMAS America record boards list his achievement of 234.50 meters in DYN-BF, accomplished in Belgrade in July 2024. In September 2025, he established a Cuban national record in open water during the Gran Retto Varadero, with approximately 190.5 meters in dynamic apnea with a monofin.
In the Santa Marta record, her declared personal best is 200 meters for DYN and 190 meters for DYN-BF, placing her tournament results below her previous best performances, although still enough to become the master M1 champion in the fins event.
