The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) announced on Monday, October 26, that Commissioner Mike Yaworsky approved several auto insurance rate reductions for USAA Group, with an average combined decrease of 7% affecting more than 498,000 policies in the state.

What Florida approved and how it affects policyholders

The reduction will not be the same for all clients. The average variations by program range from 0.4% to 11.2%, so some policyholders may benefit from discounts greater than the average of 7%.

Among the counties with the highest concentration of USAA policies are Brevard, with an average reduction of 5.8%; Escambia, with 8%; and Okaloosa, with 8.4%.

The OIR announcement does not specify when the new rates will take effect. Insured individuals should check their renewal notices to find out the date and amount of any applicable reductions to their policy.

Yaworsky highlighted the company's response to the regulator's efforts to reduce insurance costs and stated that the measure will benefit more than 498,000 policyholders in Florida. He also encouraged other companies to follow USAA's example.

Other reductions and refunds from USAA

The new approval adds to other measures announced by USAA for its members in Florida.

In December 2025, the insurance company distributed $160 million in dividends. Subsequently, it announced an extraordinary dividend of $500 million, the distribution of which began on June 15, aimed at approximately 830,000 members who held auto insurance policies between 2023 and 2025.

The company also reported estimated savings of 250 million dollars associated with rate reductions. Unlike dividends, these savings represent lower insurance costs for the benefiting customers, not direct payments.

In January 2026, the OIR had approved another average reduction of 7% for USAA, scheduled to take effect in May, with an estimated annual savings of over 125 million dollars for about 600,000 members in Florida.

Legal reforms and the insurance market in Florida

The Finance Director of Florida, Blaise Ingoglia, attributed the fee reductions to legal reforms driven by the state and highlighted their benefits for families, especially those connected to the Armed Forces.

State authorities believe that the legislative reforms of 2022 and 2023, which altered the rules regarding attorney fees and assignments of benefits in certain insurance litigations, have helped improve market conditions.

According to data released by the OIR, the automobile personal liability insurance claims rate in Florida dropped from 80.5% in 2022 to 52.5% in 2025.

In March of this year, the regulator also reported on rate reductions from the five largest auto insurance groups in Florida, which account for approximately 81% of the market.

For those groups, an aggregated rate variation of -12.6% was indicated for 2026, a figure that does not correspond to a uniform discount for all their customers.

Who can get a USAA insurance?

USAA primarily offers its services to active-duty U.S. military personnel, veterans who meet eligibility requirements, members of the National Guard and Reserves, cadets, and certain family members of eligible members.

Eligibility depends on the connection to the U.S. Armed Forces and the company’s membership conditions, not solely on nationality. Therefore, Cubans who have served in the U.S. Army or have eligible family members may also access their products.

Interested parties can check the requirements of USAA on their official site.

The reduction approved by Florida specifically applies to USAA insurance programs and does not automatically extend to other insurers operating in the state.
