The Municipal Administration Council (CAM) of Plaza de la Revolución denied on Wednesday a call that was circulating on social media announcing an event called "Fiesta del Terror" at La Piragua, the popular recreational space on the Havana Malecón, supposedly scheduled for Saturday.
According to the local governing body, the information is false: the event does not have the authorization of the Territorial Recreation Commission and therefore will not take place. The notice was published on the CAM's Facebook profile and reported by the official media outlet Tribuna de La Habana.
Journalist José Raúl Gallego responded with irony: "It’s not in La Piragua: the festival of terror is throughout Cuba and is ongoing: with no electricity, no food, no medicine, no future, with assaults, with repression, with people living increasingly like zombies and at the peak of the piragua."
The episode takes place on the eve of Halloween, a celebration that has gained popularity in Havana since around 2013, especially in the nightlife of private clubs, bars, and paladares.
La Piragua, an open-air venue located next to the Hotel Nacional de Cuba in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, is one of the most popular settings in the capital for concerts, dance performances, and community celebrations.
The space has been a subject of ongoing controversy in 2026: while the government ensures electricity for the events held there, the surrounding neighborhoods suffer from prolonged blackouts. In July, the Provincial Government announced a free concert at La Piragua to celebrate the Industriales championship while local residents had been without electricity for over 24 hours.
In May, a resident of the Focsa building reported that his neighborhood had only four hours of electricity while a party at La Piragua was lit up until two in the morning.
It is not the first time that a Halloween celebration has sparked controversy on the Island. In October 2023, the government temporarily closed the Maxim Rock club after an incident at a party where an attendee dressed as a Nazi officer; , and seven officials were sanctioned for the incident.
