A large black helicopter flying low over the water, a white boat speeding at full throttle, and two police vessels joining the chase: the images captured in Biscayne Bay, in front of the Port of Miami, left thousands speechless with one single question: What was that?
The first video was posted on Instagram by the user Renée Nicholas on October 28. She is a U.S. content creator specializing in the maritime sector, ship spotting, and the nautical lifestyle, primarily operating from Miami.
"A black helicopter flying incredibly low over Biscayne Bay was chasing a white boat, to which two police vessels later joined," Nicholas said in his first post.
He noted that the previous days had already been unusual in PortMiami: winds with gusts exceeding 40 mph, helicopters hovering over cruise ships, and vessels requiring tugboat assistance to maneuver in the port.
What caught his attention the most was the sudden end of the operation. "It was as if someone shouted 'cut' and everyone just went their separate ways. That simple," he said. He warned that it could be "a coordinated training exercise of law enforcement forces."
Just 22 hours later, the same author posted a second video featuring a scene that was almost identical: the same helicopter, the same white boat, the same police vessels, but with different movements and an alternative outcome. "Which of the two chases was better?" she asked her followers.
The first video was replicated by several accounts and went viral on @miamicertified with over 225,000 views. Another Instagram profile that shared it was user Rafael Souza on October 29. His description was straightforward: “Training day for National Security, the Miami Police, and the Miami Beach Police”.
The seemingly unreal speed of the vessels raised immediate doubts. Several users claimed that the images looked like they were generated by artificial intelligence.
"It happens that it is in fast-forward, which is why it seems like AI," said one user. Another person reinforced the explanation: "It's not AI... the Department of Homeland Security and local police departments are conducting the training."
This type of joint operations is not unprecedented in the area. PortMiami and Biscayne Bay are common venues for multi-agency law enforcement exercises in South Florida, due to the strategic importance of the port and its proximity to the Caribbean.
Miami is also a city with significant maritime activity and has been the scene of real chases involving speedboats related to drug trafficking and human smuggling.
So far, no agency —neither the Department of Homeland Security, nor the Miami Police, nor the Miami Beach Police— has issued an official confirmation regarding the exercises on October 28 and 29.
