The El Jordán Baptist Church, located in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, brought together more than 120 people this Thursday for its weekly community service for seniors, which includes spiritual activities and a free lunch prepared by the congregation's own staff.

«The Jordan church, as every Thursday, is prepared to attend to the elderly in the community... They have a time for liturgy, life interviews, poetry and songs... and afterwards a delicious lunch prepared by the church staff with great love», the institution noted on Facebook.

The congregation described the initiative as a natural expression of its mission: "doing what needs to be done," and publicly thanked those who have collaborated on what it referred to as "this life project."

The photographs from the event show elderly people sitting on the benches of the temple and around tables, with trays of rice, grains, and other foods, while volunteers handle the distribution. "May the Lord continue to bless the church El Jordán and its pastors with such a wonderful staff that shows so much dedication," commented a Cuban woman.

Other congregations have followed similar paths. The William Carey Baptist Church in El Vedado organized a distribution event in October for food, clothing, and household items for elderly individuals, and the San Juan Methodist Church in Santiago de Cuba provides breakfast and lunch to over 400 people every Sunday.

However, these initiatives are not without obstacles. In September 2026, authorities in Minas, Camagüey, prohibited a church from delivering breakfasts to vulnerable individuals at home, forcing beneficiaries to travel to the temple to receive them.

A survey from the Food Monitor Program and Cuido60, presented in May 2026, revealed that 55.6% of individuals over 60 had completely lost access to food, and 53% were allocating all their income to buy food. The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights estimated in September 2026 that nearly 79% of people over 70 were unable to have three meals a day.
