The dollar and the euro rose again this Tuesday in the informal currency market in Cuba. By the close of business on Tuesday, November 3, the U.S. currency reached 910 Cuban pesos (CUP), while the European currency stood at 994 CUP, increasingly close to the 1,000 pesos barrier.

According to the , at 8:00 p.m. (Cuba time), both currencies recorded new increases and reached their highest values in the last 30 days.

The dollar increased by seven pesos compared to Monday, when it closed at 903 CUP. However, the rise is much more significant over the past week: it went from 850 to 910 CUP, an increase of 60 pesos in just seven days.

The euro followed a similar trend. It closed this Tuesday at 994 CUP, eight pesos more than the previous day and 61 pesos above the 933 CUP recorded a week ago.

For its part, the freely convertible currency (MLC) was around 688 CUP, compared to 612 on Monday. However, this rate should be interpreted with caution due to the limited volume of offers available to calculate its value.

Exchange Rate Evolution

This is how the informal currency market in Cuba closes this Tuesday

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 910 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 994 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 688 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The informal market continues to exceed the official rate

The difference with the official exchange rate remains considerable. This Tuesday, the Central Bank of Cuba (BCC) set the rate for Segment III at 775 CUP per dollar and 868 CUP per euro.

This represents a gap of 135 pesos per dollar and 126 pesos per euro compared to the quotes in the informal market.

Even in the official market, a depreciation of the Cuban peso is observed: since the beginning of October, the dollar rate in Segment III rose from 695 to 775 CUP.

The rise in foreign exchange rates adds pressure to an economy characterized by inflation, low wages, and increasing dollarization. For Cubans who rely on income in pesos, each new increase in the value of the dollar and the euro means a loss of purchasing power and greater difficulties in accessing products and services whose prices are tied to foreign currencies.
