It is now a reality, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed this Wednesday the decree that opens the way to building a wall between the southern border of the US and the northern border of Mexico.
Those who thought that the president would take into account international and internal criticism were wrong.
“We have talked about this from the beginning”said the president during his speech at the ceremony held at the US Department of Homeland Security.
In an interview today, Trump specified that the construction of the wall will begin "ASAP". He has also assured that negotiations in order to guarantee its financing are imminent.
Trump clarified that initially the funds that will be used will be obtained from the state budget - paid for by the taxes of American citizens - but that later there will be a "100% refund" by Mexico.
However, Mexico flatly denies that it will be responsible for the payment. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto plans to visit the US next week, where he hopes to meet with Donald Trump, in order to "clarify" the issue.
Some experts estimate that the project is around $20 billion and that it also faces technical difficulties of various caliber.
The border "wall" between Mexico and the United States was one of Donald Trump's most controversial campaign proposals, a wall that is supposed to keep illegal immigrants from the United States.
In a press conference, for his part, White House Spokesperson Sean Spicer confirmed that Trump today signed the executive order that allows the construction of the “wall on the southern border of the United States.” Furthermore, he insisted that it will be Mexico who will pay for the wall.
According to Spicer, the decree is the first step to secure the border. “The people of the United States are the ones who decide who can enter our country. We are going to put an end to the policy of the previous government and now we are going to persecute illegal immigrants with criminal records,” he stated.
And I add:
“We are going to ensure that other countries receive the criminals we expel.”
