Díaz-Canel announces Torch March in Havana while hundreds of Cuban families suffer after the passage of the tornado

The Cuban Government decided not to cancel the Torch March in Havana, despite the sad scene of destruction caused by the tornado in the neighborhoods of Santos Suárez, Luyanó, Vía Blanca, Regla, Chibás and Diez de Octubre.

The realization of the night tour from the University of Havana to the Fragua Martiana, was announced by official government media Cuban and by the president himself, Díaz-Canel, who in the name of the apostle encouraged the presence of the young people.

“Martí returns to his city, today hit by a tornado. Glory does not belong to those who look back, but forward, he says, and there is only one tribute: work. Save lives and property. “Build work,” he declared on Twitter.

The call was also shared on Twitter by Raúl Palmero, current national president of the Federation of University Students (FEU).

“The Torch March continues. In solidarity with Cuban families and everyone together. From 7pm Twitazo on the steps. “Up Cuba!” wrote Palmero.

However, the celebration of this political event - in the midst of the disastrous situation in which the capital finds itself - was not well received on social networks.

“They announce the torch march for today. "Don't you realize that there is no encouragement for that?" wrote Cuban Cynthia de la Cantera.

Others have taken the Cuban leader's own words to demand in these moments of crisis changes regarding the "restrictions on the entry of essential items" into the country, "messaging rates and cell phone calls to facilitate communication" between families. who do not have electricity and the guidelines to construction companies to focus on “repairing as soon as possible many of the homes destroyed by the tornado.”

Government authorities of the Island had announced, since Saturday, the cancellation of the Torch March in the western provinces of the country due to weather reports. The event had been postponed to this Monday starting at 10:00 p.m. .

At first, “heavy rain” and “sea penetration” were forecast on Sunday afternoon. However, the tornado arrived unexpectedly, causing the death of three people and an estimated 172 injuries.

The death toll is still preliminary due to the collapses in homes, according to what the president of the Provincial Defense Council in Havana told state television. Luis Antonio Torres Iribar.

Despite the harsh conditions that Havana residents currently face, the Torch March will take place on the University Stairs.

At the same time, the communist government of the Island has called for a “tweet” starting at 7:00 p.m. with the hashtags #YoVotosí and #NosotrosVotamosYes as part of its campaign in favor of the approval of the draft Constitution, during the referendum. which will take place next February 24.
