A group of 30 migrants from Central America and Venezuela crossed the Rio Grande, many of them with children of various ages, and in the midst of great danger from the river's currents.
After having been waiting between 3 and 5 months in Matamoros (Tamaulipas) they decided that they could not continue waiting any longer and that they would cross.
“The river is strong but right now it is not so strong. “We are all going to walk past,” declared a migrant toUnivision, and specified that they made that decision “with pain” because they would not have wanted it to be like that.
Although an initial group of one hundred people tried to evade the Mexican army, only 30 managed to advance towards the river and cross it.
The images released by the aforementioned media indicate the level of danger involved in crossing the river, which is subject to large currents and very deep in some areas.
Some of the migrants had to help others who were being carried away from the group by the current. Especially moving is the image of a child carried by his father, who was crying because he saw his mother walking away from them.
Once they arrived in North American territory, the migrants were arrested by border patrols.
The part of the group that did not manage to cross the Rio Grande on this occasion has said that they will try again because they consider that this is the only way to reach the United States.
At the end of June, the overwhelming image ofa Salvadoran and his two-year-old daughter drowned in the Rio Grande, on the border between Mexico and the United States, was a reflection of the desperation of migrants seeking asylum in that country, and the dangers they face in their aspirations.
