Firefighting equipment from Russia will arrive in Cuba this year

The Russian Emergencies Ministry will send foam firefighting vehicles, airfield firefighting equipment, and tanker trucks to the island in 2023.

Teams against fires of Russia They will arrive in Cuba this year as part of the collaboration of both countries in this matter, according to Russian media.

After a meeting between the head of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies, Alexander Kurenkov, and the Cuban Minister of the Interior, Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas, who participates in the XI International Conference of Senior Representatives for Security Affairs in Russia, it was learned that the Kremlin will reequip the Russian-Cuban regional center for training specialists in fire and rescue, a report from the agency noted this Tuesday TASS.

The project includes foam firefighting vehicles, airfield firefighting equipment, tanker trucks, as well as a wide range of specialized equipment, the information from the aforementioned media detailed.

The note states that the equipment will be acquired and delivered to Cuba in the current year, but without specifying a specific date.

They also report that more than 200 fire safety specialists for Cuba have been trained in higher education institutions of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, and that currently 24 Cuban cadets are being trained there.

Likewise, they said that in the last five years, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has delivered more than 22,000 tons of food, medicines and medical supplies to Cuba.

In 2016 it was reported that Cuban firefighters would attend the Academy of the State Fire Service of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies, after 20 years without Cuban students being admitted to that high school.

The training of highly specialized firefighters in Russia is part of an agreement between the Russian counterpart and the Cuban Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Defense General Staff, which also included a support program aimed at modernizing the national civil defense system in Cuba, in order to turn it into “a single global anti-crisis network”, and to provide the Cuban government with material to respond to crisis situations, such as tents, means for seismic measurement and modern detection systems.

In this area, at the end of 2022, also The United States government decided to donate 100 firefighter suits to Cuba with their corresponding protective equipment, after the tragedy at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, which claimed the lives of 17 people, the vast majority of them firefighters, who were sent to an unprecedented catastrophe without having the necessary special suits, in the middle of the lack of control and chaos, without resources and without experience, since many were recruits of the Military Service.
