A Cuban family made up ofseven people, five adults and two minors, died in the early hours of this Wednesday in a home in the municipalityHavana Center as a consequence of a fire caused, presumably, by the explosion of electric mopeds.
The fire occurred on Perseverancia Street, No. 159, between Ánimas and Virtudes, in Centro Habana, as specified inFacebook local authorities.
The source states that the incident originated in a“housing of mixed construction, with masonry and wood structures inside”, and adds that everything seems to indicate that the incident began due to the explosion of the vehicles that were at the entrance to the room.
Images released show how several electric vehicles were burned at the entrance of the house.
The Assembly of Popular Power of Havana indicated on its social networks as a possible cause of the fire"the explosion of two motorcycles that were charging at the entrance of the house."
The Havana government indicates that joint forces of theMinisterio del Interior (MININT), including the police and the Cuban Fire Department, with resources from the municipalities of Habana Vieja, Cerro, Plaza de la Revolución and Regla, in addition to the Rescue and Rescue Detachment, acted immediately to put out the fire.
Luis Antonio Torres Iribar, First Secretary of the PCC, traveled to the place; Yanet Hernández, Governor, as well as other authorities of the Party, Government, the health system, and other social and mass organizations, from the municipality itself and the capital.
Division General Ramón Pardo Guerra, Chief of the National Civil Defense General Staff, also attended the scene of the accident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of this unfortunate event.
At the time of writing, there are no other official details about what happened, nor have the fatalities of the fatal incident been identified.
It is not the first time in recent months that people have died in Central Havana, victims of a fire with similar characteristics.
In the early morning of March 11Yonelsy Cadrelo Rodríguez (45 years old) and Vladimir Jerez Roselló (48) died due to a fire started by aelectric motorcycle that they had charging in the living room of their home on San José street between Espada and San Francisco, in Centro Habana. In that case, in addition to the deceased, three citizens aged 18, 56 and 61 were injured.
In recent years, the explosion of electric motorcycles has become one of the main causes of fire in the country, causing not only significant material losses to the victims but also resulting in injuries or deaths, in the worst case scenario.
A year ago, in June 2022, a baby even died in a fatal fire in the town of Santa Fe, in the Playa municipality of Havana due to the explosion of an electric motorcycle.
