Fire in Sancti Spíritus hospital due to an alleged gas leak

The fire started in the pantry of the hospital's intermediate therapy room.


On Tuesday night a fire broke out in the area of thepantry of the intermediate therapy room of the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital, in the city of Holy Spirit There were no injuries, although there was partial material damage.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Alioski Polo Santana, indicated in statements toEscambray whatA gas leak in a hose from a stove in which water was heated would have been the alleged cause of the accident.

The manager explained that around 8:30 p.m. A phone call was received from the command post of the hospital center alerting of the smell of gas in the area where a small stove used to heat water is located.

“Although the causes of the accident are currently being investigated, tEverything points to a gas leak at the hose intake on the back of the stove. This triggered the incident, which occurred in a place approximately 2.5 meters long by three meters wide.”, he detailed.

He explained that at first several workers who were on duty went to the scene and tried to put out the fire together with the health personnel in the room.

Although the room has capacity for 22 patients, at the time of the accident there were only four admitted, who were evacuated to another room in the hospital.

"At no time was the life of the patients in danger because the incident itself occurred a few meters from where they were", concluded Polo Santana.

After undergoing rigorous cleaning and sanitization, the room was opened again.

The Ministerio del Interior (MININT) is investigating the causes of the incident.
