Laina Pérez, a Cuban sports shooting athlete, who competes in the 2023 Central American Games, returned the bronze medal that the regulations awarded her but originally belonged to the Mexican Alejandra Cervantes.
"This medal is not mine, it is hers," the Cuban, who rejected the bronze medal awarded in the 10 meter Air Pistol test, and that Mexican Alejandra Cervantes had won by score, declared the media sports.
"Really, the person who made the regulations was not an athlete, because It is unfair that someone who earns it Because he is from the same country as the previous two, he cannot take it home and there is no justification, I think it is absurd," said Pérez during the emotional moment where he removed the medal from his neck and put it on his rival.
The Mexican Alejandra Cervantes had obtained third place but, according to the regulations of the games themselves, three medals cannot be awarded to athletes from the same country, and the Mexicans Andrea Ibarra and Alejandra Zavala had won gold and silver in this event.
"A country can only have two medals, either a gold or a silver medal and if it is a bronze medal it goes to fourth place," declared one of the organizers in a video broadcast on social networks.
Without hesitation, Laina Pérez, after receiving the recognition, took it away and handed it to the Mexican.
This gesture of fair play of the Cuban woman was applauded by the athletes and judges of the competition who were there at the time of the award ceremony.
