Cuba aspires to win five golds in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, despite the exodus of athletes that has affected several disciplines in the last two years.

In a press conference on Thursday José Antonio Miranda, high performance director of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), said that the ambitious goal can be achieved, and the island could be placed among the top 20 of the medal table. reportedWHICH.

To do this, the regime focuses its preparation on 17 outstanding athletes.

In addition, another 12 athletes who will participate in the Paralympic Games complement the group of medal hopefuls, according to INDER authorities.

Among the most notable figures are the wrestler Mijaín López, the boxers Julio César La Cruz, Arlen López and Luis Alberto Orta, the judoka Idalys Ortiz, and the runner Omara Durand, who will represent Cuba in the Paralympics.

The figure of five represents two medals less than those achieved in the previous games held in Tokyo, where the delegation achieved a total of 15 medals, including seven gold, three silver and five bronze, and was positioned in fourteenth place in the medal table.

This achievement marked the country's best Olympic performance in 20 years, surpassing its records in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Last year, INDER recognized that "themigration of athletes has affected us":

"The migration of athletes and coaches has affected us.109 athletes stopped being with us in 2022, and78 in 2023, many of them with commitments to the Pan American Games,” said José Antonio Miranda this Tuesday in a Round Table dedicated to the Pan American Games that were held last November in Chile.

On Thursday the rulerMiguel Diaz-Canel He expressed his confidence in Cuban athletes, said that they were an "attacked sector" and described the medal forecast as "conservative."
