Dantesque images attest to the miserable conditions in which several Cuban families live who, due to the lack of decent housing, have had no choice but tobuild their houses under a bridge in Havana.
Andreportage of about four minutes, published this Tuesday by the independent mediaCubanet, testifies to the existence of a settlement of precarious houses built under theelevated railway, in the section that passes through the Luyanó neighborhood, in the municipality of Diez de Octubre.
In the Facebook post,Cubanet asks: “How many houses fit under a bridge? Poverty in Cuba has an answer.”
Wooden planks, zinc and other metal sheets, dissimilar doors and windows, whose appearance denotes that they were rescued from collapsed, demolished or abandoned buildings, are thematerials that make up the rustic homes built and others that are in progress, under the structure of this bridge, which begins in the Havana port area and extends through several municipalities and neighborhoods of the capital.
The reporter shows the trains, a few meters from the shacks, and comments: “I'm going to show you one of the'achievements' of the Cuban revolution. Check this out! One of the 'achievements' of the Cuban revolution:a family living under the bridge"Look where they have built a little house."
The rustic construction, seen from the outside, apparently consists of a single space, with a door and windows, all painted with lime. In the front, some wooden slats are placed in what could become the future “extension” of the house.
“That is such a big housing problem in our country,” emphasizes the author of the video, and details some of the materials with which the houses are built: wood, zinc boards, among others.
“There is no light here, there is no water. These people light themselves with gossip, with lamps, locks", notes the reporter, evidencing theinhumane conditions in which these people live, who do not have any of the basic services that correspond to all human beings by right.
In the images, at least half a dozen finished houses and some in the process of construction appear, but the residents of the place are not seen.
Thehousing crisis in Cuba has forced thousands of people to look for places to live, whether private homes or abandoned state buildings, such as places to build a shack or a room with rustic materials, given the lack of a solution from the government to the problems.housing problems of the country's citizens.
In Ciego de Ávila, for example, some24 families live in precarious conditions in train cars, which they have illegally occupied in a neighborhood of Morón for 15 years, awaiting a solution from the authorities.
Illegal occupation of homes in the country skyrocketed from 2022, not only due to the worsening of the national economic crisis, but also due to the increase in migration.
In this situation,The regime approved measures that toughen the sanctioning framework, with prison sentences of six months to two years and fines of 200 to 500 quotas for those who commit such acts.
