Ship with powdered milk from Brazil arrives in Cuba

The ship brought powdered milk, rice, corn and soybean meal. It is the first shipment of several that will arrive in Cuba in the coming weeks, said the Brazilian ambassador.

A ship with food arrived at the Mariel Container Terminal on Wednesday, a fact that began tripartite cooperation between the United Arab Emirates, Brazil and Cuba.

The ship, coming from the South American country, unloaded powdered milk, rice, corn and soy flour, products in deficit on the Island, which is going through the worst economic crisis in its history.

This is the first step of the food security cooperation initiative between the three countries, whose objective is the delivery of food aid to Cuba worth 50 million US dollars.

"This is the first cargo of a succession that will arrive in Cuba in the coming weeks and that materializes the determination of our governments to work together...", stated Christian Vargas, ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil, at the reception ceremony.

For his part, Oscar Pérez-Oliva, First Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, recalled that Brazil and the UAE currently constitute important commercial partners of Cuba, and stressed the Island's interest in increasing cooperation in other priority areas such as renewable energies, agriculture and the environment.

This new cooperation project, with which the regime aspires to improve the food situation in Cuba, was agreed at the end of 2023 during the 28th Conference of the Parties - better known as COP - on climate change, held in Dubai.

Miguel Díaz-Canel traveled to the luxurious emirate city, whose participation in the event began atour of Middle Eastern countries, which later included Qatar and Iran.

Upon his return to Havana, the ruler said thatsignificant agreements had been established in the Arab Emirates, including reciprocal investment protection treaties and elimination of double taxation.

In addition, according to Díaz-Canel, opportunities were explored in tourism, agriculture, biotechnology and renewable energy, as that country showed interest in solving Cuban energy problems.
