An ammonia leak was reported at the Majibacoa ice plant, Las Tunas, leading to the evacuation of residents and students due to the toxicological risks of the gas.
The ammonia leak has already been controlled by firefighters but local authorities emphasize the need to stay informed and follow safety precautions.
On Tuesday afternoon, a worrying ammonia (NH3) leak occurred in the ice plant at the Majibacoa power plant. The leak arose at the time when the ammonia refilling process was being carried out, after repairs to the gas storage tank, used in the production of ice.
The emergency protocols were activated when a leak was detected in the valve of the conveyor pipe. In accordance with the protection of human lives, ten families located around the factory were evacuated, as well as teachers and students from the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Agricultural Polytechnic Institute (IPA).
Workers at the Majibacoa plant and the UCAI remain alert but continue their daily work under specialized guidance.
Fire crews sprayed water in the area to dissipate the concentration of the gas, which is estimated to be around 300 kg, a significant amount given theammonia toxicity.
Authorities asked residents of nearby communities to stay well informed. It is crucial that those people who experience breathing difficulties, as the air becomes heavier, position themselves in the direction of the wind and avoid running with or against it.
It is also advisable to use a wet towel to cover your nose and eyes.
This accident highlights once again the need for adequate safety and maintenance measures in Cuban industrial facilities.
Emergency protocols can be effective and very well executed to guarantee the safety of citizens against industrial risks, but accidents like this are proof of the country's shortcomings and low technological development.
