The United States sanctions charter flight executive for facilitating irregular migration.

The United States government reported new sanctions on carriers that facilitate the entry of irregular immigrants into the country.

The United States is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on an executive of a charter flight transportation company for facilitating irregular migration to the United States through Nicaragua from outside the Western Hemisphere," the State Department said in an information note.

They also point to the Nicaraguan regime as one of the main beneficiaries of these transportation activities.

"At the same time, the Ortega-Murillo regime in Nicaragua continues to economically benefit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants," they say.

This measure, explains the statement, "promotes accountability for these actors," adding that "no one should benefit from vulnerable migrants, neither traffickers, nor private companies, nor public officials."

In this way, the Biden administration warns that they will continue "taking measures to impose visa restrictions on owners, executives, and top officials of transport companies without scruples as part of our broader campaign to eliminate these exploitative practices within and outside of the Western Hemisphere, in collaboration with partners in government and the private sector."

The Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian A. Nichols, spoke through X saying, "The United States continues to promote accountability against those who profit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants. We have taken measures to restrict the visa for an executive of a charter flight company for facilitating migration through Nicaragua."

Since November 2023, the United States imposed visa restrictions under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) "against owners, executives, and senior officials of companies that offer charter flights to Nicaragua designed to be primarily used by irregular migrants to the United States," a statement from the State Department said.

After that announcement, many airlines that were transporting Cubans to Nicaragua stopped offering flights to connect both countries.
