The migratory exodus of Cubans claimed another victim at the border between Chile and Bolivia, precisely in the commune of Colchane, where the body of a man around 60 years old was found.
According to police reports, the discovery took place around 8:30 am this Tuesday in the bofedales area of Pisiga Carpa, just a few meters from the border with Bolivia, and constitutes the second death of this kind so far in June, as reported by the Chilean news portal 24 hours.
The traveler of Cuban nationality, who apparently tried to cross the border, was declared dead by professionals at the medical center in Colchane, after receiving the notice from the Carabineros of Chile.
Although the authorities did not disclose the name of the victim, they reported that the causes of death are being investigated and the body will be transferred to the city of Iquique for the corresponding autopsy.
For years, the migratory exodus of Cubans has had among its destinations the countries of South and Central America, which have served as access routes to arrive in the United States or new territories to restart their lives, far from the economic, political, and social crisis on the island.
In that same region, Colchane, other migrants have died due to the conditions of this border crossing located in an Andean area at over 3,600 meters above sea level and with extreme temperatures.
Three years ago, the lifeless body of the young Cuban migrant Víctor David Copello Hernández was found between Bolivia and Peru on April 17, 2021, making headlines. His family launched a fundraising campaign on the GoFundMe platform to repatriate the body.
This case adds to the dozens of deaths recorded along the route between Nicaragua and Mexico, which thousands of immigrants travel every day, exposed to the inclement weather, criminal gangs, human trafficking, and accidents, among other difficulties.
In February of this year, authorities from the Guatemalan Institute of Migration identified nine deceased Cuban migrants in a traffic accident that occurred at kilometer 134.5 on the Pacific route, Chicacao, Suchitepequez.
Before that incident, between January 1st and February 5th, four events were reported on the migratory routes where Cuban nationals died in Mexican and Guatemalan territory, El Toque pointed out.
Recently, it was reported the death of another Cuban, this time inside the rented home in the Costa Verde condominium in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico.
