A car suffered a serious accident on a Cuban highway this Monday, requiring the intervention of police, paramedics, and firefighters at the scene.
Reports on social media indicate that there may be fatalities in the incident. At the time of writing this note, neither the authorities nor the official media are reporting on what happened.
Cuban internet users shared videos of the incident, in which the damages suffered by the vehicle could be seen. Apparently, it is a modern car, similar to those used for tourist rentals.
With its front part destroyed, the vehicle apparently collided with another one, but it was impossible for this editorial team to determine the cause of the accident.
Early in the morning, on the highway, before reaching Dos Caminos. Apparently, there are fatalities. My condolences to the families," a user from the Facebook group 'Accidentes Buses & Camiones' stated.
At least two ambulances were dispatched to the location, which has also not been precisely identified. Reports place it on the road to Santiago de Cuba, near the town of Dos Caminos, belonging to the municipality of San Luis.
Apparently, the presence of the firefighters was due to the need to free the occupants of the vehicle who were trapped inside. Judging by the images, no fire was declared in the incident.
According to the report by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the accident took place "this Monday morning on the Central Highway, between the towns of Dos Caminos and El Cristo in Santiago de Cuba."
You can see in this short video how the Tourism car ended up, but at the moment, we don't know what it collided with. They say there are no fatalities, but there are injured individuals who were lying on the road while others are being taken to the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital in the main city.
A supposed witness to the event indicated that "there was a failure in the car's steering and they crashed into a tree."
"The people involved (who have already been rescued) are young individuals from Palma Soriano Municipality. We do not know if they are residents there, although I am told they are visiting," Mayeta Labrada pointed out.
