Four people died in a traffic accident that occurred early Thursday morning on the road to Santa Lucía Beach in Nuevitas, Camagüey province.
The accident occurred in the community of Las 80, when two young people traveling in a car towards the beach stopped and got out of the vehicle -apparently to urinate-, but they did so on the opposite path and were run over by another car traveling in that direction, according to information from people close to the victims.
A source consulted by the independent newspaper CubaNet confirmed this version of events and identified the young people as Cliver Álvarez Mayo, 17 years old, who died instantly; and Dailenis Silva, 19 years old, who passed away at the Nuevitas hospital. Both resided in the municipality of Manatí, in the province of Las Tunas.
The car that crashed into the young people overturned after the collision, fell into the ditch, and caught fire, causing the death of two of its occupants "burned by the explosion," reported CubaNet. Two other people who were traveling in the front seats of this vehicle managed to escape alive.
So far, the identity of the other two deceased individuals has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, it is reported that at least two people have serious injuries and one has minor injuries, but this information has not been corroborated by CiberCuba.
Neither local authorities nor media outlets have provided information about the fateful accident, which has shocked residents of both Camagüey and Las Tunas.
People close to the two identified victims have expressed their pain on social media and conveyed condolences to their families.
You don't know the pain this has caused us, my classroom partner; you don't know the pain it will bring me when I enter my classroom and don't see you. You will always be in my heart, my life. Rest in peace, you left me too young, my heart. RIP Cliver", wrote Yadianna Ávilas Pérez on Facebook.
Today we are saddened by the painful news of your departure, you who were full of life and joy, with your presence nothing was dull, and although you are in heaven today, we will never forget you. R.I.P. friend," were the words of Armín Santiesteban Barcena for Dailenis.
In another road accident that occurred on Wednesday, Omar Rafael García Lazo, a 44-year-old high-ranking official of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) who was included in the list of regime repressors, died. The man was on his way back to Havana, but no other details about the incident have been revealed.
On Tuesday, a woman suffered serious injuries after being hit by a tourist car while riding a bicycle on the Jiguaní-Baire highway in Granma.
