Tanker truck overturns on the Isle of Youth

Apparently, it was a Soviet-made ZIL truck with license plate B 079 520, which was serving as a water supply tanker.


A tanker truck, likely a water tank, was involved in an accident on Saturday in Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud, and ended up overturned on the road for reasons that are unknown.

Posts on social media reported the unfortunate incident, in which no serious injuries were reported. Images shared by the Facebook group 'Bus & Truck Accidents' allowed to see the presence of a medical emergency ambulance from the Integrated Medical Emergency Service (SIUM) at the scene.

The truck, apparently a Soviet-made ZIL, with license plate B 079 520, was completely overturned on the street. Although reports did not indicate the location of the accident, it may have happened at the intersection of 32nd and 41st streets in Nueva Gerona.

At the time of writing this note, neither authorities nor official media are echoing the event. The condition of the driver of the vehicle and whether there was another occupant traveling in it are unknown. After the accident, a group of neighbors rushed to the scene to provide first aid, as can be seen in the video shared by a user.

At the end of May, one person died and another was injured after a tanker truck lost control and plummeted in a mountainous area in the municipality of Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus.

In a post from the aforementioned Facebook group, details of the road accident that occurred this Tuesday on a hill known as La Raspadura, in the community of La Ceiba, were revealed.

People who know the occupants of the tanker truck confirmed that in the accident, the driver's assistant lost his life, while the driver himself suffered injuries, although at the time of publishing this note, his health status has not been specified.

The deceased resided in the rural community of La Güira and was "a great person," commented a user. Shortly thereafter, it was known that he was the uncle of the Cuban actress Aly Sánchez, to whom he had already been granted "humanitarian parole" to emigrate to the United States.

Also at the end of May, but in 2023, a fuel tanker from the company Petróleos de Cuba (CUPET) overturned on a road in the eastern province of Holguín. Social media users indicated that the accident occurred as the truck was coming down from the town of La Gloria in Holguín.
