Luis Alberto Milián, a 58-year-old Cuban resident in Miami, was arrested on Monday after the Miami-Dade police said he stole several checks from the restaurant where he worked as a cook. Checks for which he cashed over $6,000.
According to the arrest report, the victim told the police that on July 26, Milián did not show up for work at the establishment located at 1657 NW 79th Ave, in the city of Doral, and that he did not answer his phone when his boss called him several times.
The victim told detectives that she was in her office on August 1 and took her business checkbook that she kept in a drawer when she discovered that several were missing.
According to the report -quoted by the local press- the victim immediately went to the bank to inquire about the missing checks and discovered that Milián had fraudulently cashed all of them except one.
The victim obtained copies of the checks and contacted the police. Authorities said that the checks were cashed at a place called Presidente Check Cashing for a total amount of 6,300 dollars.
The other check was cashed in the same place by a man identified as Rubén Marín, 60 years old, who remains missing.
The detectives obtained surveillance videos from Presidente Check Cashing showing both suspects cashing the checks.
Luis Alberto Milián, who was arrested at his home on August 5, faces charges of grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and use of a false instrument/check.
Until the afternoon of this Tuesday, the accused remained detained at the Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Correctional Center with a bail set at $15,000.
