A Cuban resident in Hialeah was arrested this Wednesday for being responsible for a traffic accident that caused serious injuries to three people, including a five-month-old baby, after running a red light while driving under the influence.

The Hialeah Police Department reported that Didier Durán Peña, 45, was the driver who on July 22 did not stop his vehicle at a red traffic light near the intersection of West Eighth Avenue and West 29th Avenue in Hialeah, causing a collision with another car shortly before 8:30 p.m.

According to witnesses and CCTV images, Durán was the driver and sole occupant of a white 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan that caused the collision with a red 2016 Nissan Altima, local media reported.

As a result of the impact, the driver of the Nissan suffered a lung contusion and a severe laceration to the spleen, the passenger in the front seat had several rib fractures and abdominal fluid accumulation, while the baby, who was in the back seat, also suffered multiple rib fractures.

The medical personnel who arrived at the accident scene noticed that Durán emitted a "strong smell of alcohol" and observed his "red and glassy eyes" and "difficulty speaking." According to the arrest report, the man admitted that he had consumed several beers earlier that day, but could not specify the amount.

Durán was transferred to Hialeah Hospital, where, by police order, a blood test was conducted, which confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The accused faces three charges for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury.

Until this Thursday, he was detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and a bond of $30,000 was set.

According to his social media profile, Durán is a native of Ciego de Ávila.
