Neighbors capture a house thief in a neighborhood of Havana.

Neighbors of the Sevillano neighborhood, in Diez de Octubre, Havana, caught a thief who broke into several houses in the area in broad daylight, according to a citizen report.

The individual was captured by local residents who decided to take matters into their own hands and beat him in the face after discovering him, judging by the photos from a Facebook post.

"Thief found in Jorge, between Gertrudis and Continental. Inside the houses," published a user identified as Iyawo Oshun.

The photos show a man in his 40s, sitting on the pavement of the street, with a swollen eye and blood on his nose, while several people surround him, apparently to keep him from fleeing.

Several of the comments applauded the action of the neighbors, in light of the increase in crime and the weak response from the authorities to curb the growing wave of thefts and assaults in the country, with fatal outcomes in many cases.

"It is necessary to do justice with that criminal who robs others without any sensitivity; whoever enters a house is ready for anything," said a woman.

But others were less optimistic: "Now they release him after two days and he continues stealing."

Some justified the violence against the thieves as a form of punishment. “They gave him a good punch in the face, and now he has a swollen eye. That's good for him to learn not to steal and to work honestly,” warned a young woman.

The escalation of thefts, assaults, and violent crimes in Cuba keeps the population on edge, fearful of social insecurity.

While criminal acts echo on social media, the official press remains silent and only speaks out in very high-profile cases, such as the brutal murder of four people—a child, a teenager, and both their mothers—at the end of August, which occurred during a robbery at a house in Ceballos, Ciego de Ávila.
