A man died on Friday night after being stabbed in front of his family's house in Santiago de Cuba.

According to a post on his Facebook wall by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the man was killed on Rastro Street by some young people who were "stabbing everyone in their path."

The group was leaving a street party on Martí and Corona streets, where a fight broke out. From there, they went down Rastro, where the victim was visiting some relatives.

The deceased, who was celebrating his birthday these days, was named José Miguel Hechavarría (Titi) and was a graduate of the Faculty of Health Technology, where he earned a Gold Degree in the field of Hygiene and Epidemiology.

Miguel was the head of the hygiene department at the Josué País García polyclinic in the Abel Santamaría neighborhood.

"The man was sitting when those people came with a knife and machete, and the nephew was in that fight, until he stood up and started to separate them, and they stabbed him in the back. They left him lying there for about 10 minutes bleeding without anyone helping him, until two people and I carried him and put him on a motorcycle," recounted a witness.

This version of events differs from what Dianeya Romero recounted, who identified herself as the niece of the deceased and claims that no one from the family was involved in the fight.

"The bastards who stabbed him were coming from a party, slashing everyone who got in their way, and my uncle was sitting outside because the CDR party had ended. They stabbed him twice in the lung, they threw my cousin, and they slashed my cousin with one of the knives," he said.

"They had nothing to do with what happened, my uncles were bringing all my cousins into the house without realizing that the one lying on the bloodied floor was my uncle. We took him to the hospital, where he arrived alive, but upon entering the emergency room, he passed away. A girl from the neighborhood was the one who realized it was my uncle because everything was dark," he added.

Apparently, there were five attackers, and so far it is not known if they have been apprehended, but it is known that they injured other people.

The user identified as Mohana La Más Viral rode through the conflict zone, and what she saw seemed to her like a "massacre."

"A friend of my boyfriend was cut and received a terrible wound in his leg. Then, when he was coming down on the motorcycle to my house on the street just before the Martí line, they were all there with machetes, files, knives, and all kinds of weapons; it looked like World War I," she described.

Lagnara Megret, a resident of the area, reported that the young people had been causing trouble since 3:00 am. "I was sleeping and the noise they were making woke me up; they were all over Martí Avenue armed, looking for the person they wanted to stab," she detailed.
