The United States Coast Guard (USCG) reported the presence of waves up to 2.4 meters (between 7 and 8 feet) and strong winds in the Gulf of Mexico, conditions linked to Hurricane Milton, whose intensity decreased from category five to four on the Saffir Simpson scale in recent hours.

According to the report, these extreme conditions were experienced by the crew of the Cutter Venturous, which was located approximately 965 kilometers (600 miles) northeast of the center of the hurricane on Monday, October 7, 2024.

The Cutter Venturous has been repositioned to prepare for the storm's impact in the area, while navigating through rough seas and intense winds, detailed the USCG.

Authorities urged all vessels to closely follow updates from the National Meteorological Service and to monitor VHF-FM channel 16 for warning notices for smaller vessels.

A video of the operation, courtesy of Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Yahle, shows the difficult conditions in which the Coast Guard operates to ensure safety in the area affected by the hurricane.

Hurricane Milton continues to affect the Gulf of Mexico region, and it is expected to make landfall in Florida on Thursday.

It is currently a category four hurricane moving through the Gulf of Mexico and has caused flooding in the west of Cuba.

The work of the USCG during hurricane season is often risky but essential.
