A thief who stole more than a million pesos from a Cuban couple, including the money they had and the belongings taken, was arrested and tried in Havana.
The incident occurred in the Micro 10 neighborhood, in the Alamar district of East Havana, when a couple from Mayabeque went to a meeting with the alleged criminal, as described in a report by Televisión Cubana, which did not specify the reason for that meeting.
However, the appointment turned into a robbery, where the use of a knife by the criminal was also involved, who at that first moment managed to escape with all the stolen belongings.
"I was summoned via WhatsApp to a building in Alamar and there I was robbed," said one of the victims.
His companion, both unidentified, added that with a helmet he had in his hand, his partner managed to defend himself when he was attacked with the knife. "It didn't penetrate any organ, it was all superficial, but he did get a mark," he recounted.
An official from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) stated that thanks to the collaboration of the population, it was possible to detain the alleged author of the robbery, who, although not specified, could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
"Especially when it is reported that a weapon was used, an appropriate instrument for aggression, and injuries were inflicted on the person... that is why the framework for sanctioning in this case is more severe," detailed Maikel Santana Cabrera, president of the Fourth Chamber of the Provincial People's Court of Havana.
The official narrative falls within a wave of crimes in the country, most of which the police are unable to resolve. However, while it remains silent on the majority, the state-controlled press highlights those cases from which it can benefit to clean the name of its Revolutionary National Police, which does not enjoy a good reputation among Cubans.
The same was done in early September with the dismantling of an alleged criminal gang made up of several young people from the Cienfuegos municipality of Cumanayagua.
Days later, he repeated the theft in a house in the Peñas Altas neighborhood, in Matanzas.
