This is how Baracoa wakes up after the impact of Hurricane Oscar.

Houses and buildings without roofs, fallen trees, devastated crops, and affected power lines: The destruction caused by winds of approximately 130 km/h is visible as dawn breaks over Villa Primada.

After making landfall at 5:50 PM this Sunday near Baracoa, the passage of Hurricane Oscar through the historic villa of Eastern Cuba leaves stunning images this Monday morning.

The devastation caused by winds of approximately 130 km/h is visible as dawn breaks over Villa Primada. Houses and businesses without roofs, fallen trees, destroyed crops, and damaged power lines are some of the scenes left in the wake of the weather event.

"Some houses and state institutions without roofs, debris, and fallen trees in the town of Jamal, Baracoa," reported Radio Baracoa on its social media.

This Sunday, as the hurricane approached the coasts of Cuba, social media users shared images of the effects of Oscar in Baracoa, with strong winds, heavy rains, and large waves that demonstrated the power with which the cyclonic system was impacting the easternmost part of the island.

"In El Jamal, Baracoa. It is now lightly raining and people are walking around the area to observe the damage left by Oscar the night before," said Radio Baracoa this morning, sharing new photographs and videos of the destruction caused.

The arrival of Oscar in Cuba further worsened the already critical situation in the eastern region, caused by the general blackout that has engulfed the entire country since Friday morning, when the National Electric System (SEN) completely collapsed.

More than 72 hours later, the authorities, executives of the Electric Union, and technicians from the thermoelectric plants have not managed to fully recover from the collapse of the SEN, caused by a lack of maintenance and investment in electricity generation.

Since Friday, the recovery efforts of the SEN have been marked by several total and partial disconnections. On Saturday morning, while trying to rehabilitate, the system collapsed again. In the evening, the government announced the restoration of electricity in only 11% of the country, but something went wrong again during the restart and the SEN stopped functioning once more.

On the afternoon of this Sunday, another total disconnection occurred— the fourth since Friday— after a "shot" happened at the 10 de Octubre Thermoelectric Power Plant in Nuevitas, Camagüey.
