The Cuban baseball player Reinier Hernández Echevarría, 35 years old, was finally located after his family in the U.S. city of Miami launched a social media campaign to find him following several days without news.

Hernández, originally from Pinar del Río, shared his experience with the magazine Cubalite, explaining that he surrendered to the Border Patrol in an attempt to seek political asylum and to be able to see his newborn daughter in the United States.

"I was very eager to be with my daughter, but my appointment through CBP One never came, so I took the risk and requested asylum at the border without telling my family. I thought they would let me make a call, but that was not the case," she said.

"I was detained for 19 days without any communication," Hernández said, also mentioning that he suffered mistreatment and that his asylum requests were not respected.

The player explained that he was deported from the United States back to Mexico, lost his belongings, and is facing difficult conditions as he tries to secure a new appointment to enter the country legally.

His wife, Yedenia Pereda, reported his disappearance in early October when the baseball player stopped communicating from Tijuana, where he was awaiting approval for his entry.

Reinier Hernández, who was part of the provincial pre-selections of Pinar del Río and Artemisa in Cuba's National Series, also stated that he will try to continue his immigration process to finally reunite with his family in Miami.
