The day of the United States elections has arrived, a decisive day with the two candidates, Vice President Kamala Harris (Democrat) and former President Donald Trump (Republican), running very close in the polls. This tie in the surveys raises fears of a nail-biting recount.
It is difficult to know when and at what time the results will be known, and to make calculations, the American media has opted to note the closing times of the polling places in the battleground states. Nevertheless, they assume that the vote counting may take a while. In any case, a new law mandates that a winner of the elections must be determined by December 11.
One of those key states is North Carolina. There, the polls will close at 7:30 PM, and results are expected to start coming in between 8:00 and 9:30 PM, although it is assumed that the final tally will not be available on election night since provisional ballots are expected to be counted afterward, according to CNN Spanish.
In Georgia, another of the contested states, it is expected that the results will be known this Tuesday after the polls close at 7:00 PM.
In Pennsylvania, polling places will close at 8:00 PM, but the counting may take several days. A similar situation often occurs in Arizona, where the polls close this Tuesday at 9:00 PM.
In Michigan, results are usually available 24 hours after the elections, so they are expected this Wednesday following the closing of the polling places, which is scheduled from 8:00 to 9:00 PM.
In Wisconsin, the polls close at 9:00 PM, but some results from cities may arrive on Wednesday morning.
Finally, Nevada closes the polls at 10:00 PM, but the state accepts ballots until November 9th.
Therefore, without knowing the electoral outcome in key states, it is difficult to predict a winner. In fact, in 2020, even four days later, media outlets like CNN could not foresee Biden's victory, which was determined four days later when the results in Pennsylvania were announced, awarding Biden 20 electoral votes, enough to surpass the required 270 and secure the presidency of the country.
On the contrary, in 2016, Hillary Clinton knew she had lost the election the day after the polls closed. However, in 2000, the results from Florida took 36 days to arrive.
It is likely that if Trump loses the election, he will contest the results. In 2020, he claimed fraud, and in fact, during this election campaign, he has repeatedly stated that there was fraud four years ago.
What do you think?
