Hurricane-force gusts are battering Havana following the impact of Cyclone Rafael, which made landfall in the province of Artemisa on Wednesday afternoon.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) posted on social media X an image captured at 5:00 PM by the Doppler radar of the National Weather Service in Key West, showing Hurricane Rafael moving inland in western Cuba.
In its publication, the NHC also noted that conditions have significantly deteriorated in Havana, where hurricane-force gusts are already being reported, intensifying the impact of this phenomenon in the region.
Hurricane Rafael made landfall at Playa Majana at 4:20 PM, approximately 75 km south-southwest of Havana, and since then, the strength of its winds has battered the Cuban capital.
A video posted on Facebook by Martí Noticias shows the intensity of the wind gusts in Havana East.
The official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso shared another video on Facebook that shows the strong winds battering the Cuban capital.
"The weather is completely disrupted, with very strong winds and heavy rain affecting much of the capital," Alonso pointed out from one of the upper floors of the ICRT building in Havana.
Additionally, it was reported that all electrical circuits in the capital were without service following the collapse of the National Electric System that occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Journalist Guillermo Rodríguez Hidalgo also reported on social media that the strength of the winds was being strongly felt in La Lisa, Havana.
Hurricane Rafael is also impacting the municipality of Batabanó in Mayabeque, with strong winds and flooding caused by heavy rains and sea surges.
