A massive accident that occurred this Wednesday in the municipality of Maisí, in Guantánamo, resulted in four people injured, one of them in critical condition, according to local sources.
The traffic accident occurred near the town of La Máquina, in the easternmost municipality of Cuba, and the injured were taken to the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja General Teaching Hospital in Baracoa, reported the telecenter Primada Visión.
Due to their injuries, the following individuals were hospitalized: Yoenni Rusell Columbié, 40 years old, suffering from multiple trauma and in critical condition, requiring mechanical ventilation; Yurina Matos Matos, 42, a resident of San Ramón de Vertiente, with multiple contusions; Vilmari Rivera Columbié, 40, also with multiple contusions; and Wilmer Vladimir Noa Rodríguez, 52 years old, a resident of Puriales de Sabana in Maisí, with minor injuries to his upper limbs, according to a medical report provided by Dr. Yuri Alexei Hernández, director of the hospital in Baracoa.
In an update on the patients' progress, published on Thursday afternoon, Primada Visión reported that three of them have been discharged from the hospital and are recovering at home.
Meanwhile, Rusell Columbié remains hospitalized, reported as "critically stable." The report specified that a cranial CT scan was performed this Thursday, which yielded negative results, and that he is "on ventilator support."
The reports from the Baracoa telecenter have not provided details on how the accident occurred, what time it happened on Wednesday, or which vehicles were involved.
During the first half of this year, a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) was recorded in Cuba compared to the first six months of 2023, according to official statistics.
Social media reports frequent accidents on the roads and streets of the country, many of which result in fatalities, injuries, and significant material damage.
