Authorities from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) in Cuba captured the alleged killer of a woman in the Diputada neighborhood of Bijarú, Báguanos municipality, who was attacked in her own home for the purpose of stealing gold jewelry and cash.

The incident occurred on the night of November 22 between 8:30 and 10:00 PM, allegedly at the hands of a young man identified as Yamichel Periche Díaz, who is now in custody, reported the official Facebook profile "Cazador-Cazado."

The victim, Tania Liset Hidalgo Ávila, 51 years old, was brutally murdered –by strangulation and stabbing– in her own home. Her sister found her dead the following day.

According to the investigation, the attacker attempted to destroy evidence by pouring detergent over the victim's body and a chair where she allegedly sat.

Despite his attempts to cover up the crime, specialists from MININT managed to identify and capture him in less than 24 hours, recovering some of the stolen goods, emphasized the official profile.

According to local sources, the accused was facing multiple debts related to gambling, which may have motivated the crime. The name of the victim has not been disclosed.

Authorities assured that the case will be prosecuted with the full rigor of the law, against a backdrop of rising public insecurity and violence against women.

This week, a woman was also killed in Santiago de Cuba during a robbery at her home.
