Three individuals have been sentenced for the death of a young man following an attack at a birthday party in Santiago de Cuba

The men were convicted of homicide and other offenses, while in a separate trial, an individual was sentenced to 10 years for robbery with violence.

Cuban state media reported on the cases of several individuals who were tried for violent crimes committed in Santiago de Cuba, one of which resulted in the death of a young man.

In the Criminal Division of the Provincial People's Tribunal, the trial for case 123 of 2024 took place against three men accused of attempted murder, homicide, public disorder, and illegal possession and carrying of weapons.

The incident occurred on December 4, 2023, at 1:30 a.m. during a birthday party held at kilometer 12 and a half, El Castillito, in the town of El Cobre.

According to the Sierra Maestra newspaper, the accused were hiding a small machete and a machete among their clothes, with which they caused the death of a young man, attempted to murder another, and injured four others.

The court sentenced those involved, whose names were not disclosed to the press, to 20, 25, and 30 years of imprisonment, along with the additional penalties of deprivation of rights and a prohibition on leaving the country.

The other case involved an individual who attempted a robbery with violence one day at 5:00 AM at the intersection of Corona and Enramadas streets.

"The accused, upon noticing the presence of the victim, approached her with a knife and threatened to stab her if she did not hand over the glasses she was wearing, successfully taking them from her, which were later recovered," the information specifies.

The thief, who had been tried twice for the same type of crime, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the additional penalties of deprivation of rights, prohibition of leaving the national territory, and confiscation of the knife.

In both trials, the sanctioned parties and the prosecution can file a cassation appeal against the court's decision.

Sierra Maestra emphasized that during the processing of both cases and in the oral trial, procedural guarantees and respect for due process were upheld.
