More than 1,300 flights canceled in the U.S. due to a severe winter storm

In the coming days, there will be very cold temperatures that will also be felt in Florida, where severe frost will reach as far south as the southern part of the state.

More than 1,300 flights were canceled and hundreds more were delayed in the United States on Monday due to a severe winter storm that has been hitting the country since the weekend, bringing heavy snowfall and frigid winds.

According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, as of 10:13 GMT (5:00 AM in Miami), a total of 1,306 flights were canceled and 414 experienced delays.

The airline most affected was Southwest Airlines, with 264 flights canceled, followed by American Airlines with 176. Southwest, American, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines also canceled trips.

Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC suspended 234 flights, accounting for 58% of all scheduled flights, the highest figure in the country.

Train travel was also impacted by the storms, with over 20 cancellations on Sunday, more than 40 scheduled for Monday, and two already planned for Tuesday, according to reports from the AP agency.

The massive wave of snow, wind, ice, and low temperatures has created hazardous travel conditions from the central and southern United States to the East Coast, where hundreds of drivers have had to be rescued from the roads by the National Guard.

The cold weather forced the closure of schools and government offices in several states, and nearly 300,000 customers were left without electricity early Monday morning in Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri, according to the utility tracking website PowerOutage.us.

Meteorologists forecast that starting Monday, temperatures will range between 12 and 25 degrees (7 and 14 degrees Celsius).

According to Jon Palmer from the National Weather Service, it is more likely that the northeastern states will experience several days of cold after a mostly mild start to winter.

"The cold air is likely to affect the eastern United States down to southern Georgia, while some areas on the East Coast will see lows in the single digits," he noted.

The Meteorological Prediction Center warned that dangerously cold temperatures are expected in the coming days, which will also be felt in Florida, where severe frost will reach as far south as the state.
