The Miami-Dade Police are searching for the driver responsible for an accident that fled the scene, leaving a critically injured woman and three other family members injured last Friday.
Around 3:40 PM on January 3rd, on Highway 836, the driver of a white sedan changed lanes and collided with the car carrying four members of the Vázquez family, who are of Venezuelan origin.
The victims' vehicle collided with another car and was hit from behind by a fourth vehicle, causing it to overturn and roll several times on the road, authorities reported.
As a result of the multi-car collision, Hortensia Vázquez was ejected through a window of the car and impacted the pavement, suffering very serious injuries. The driver who hit the victims' vehicle fled the scene without offering assistance.
Due to her critical condition, Hortensia was urgently transferred to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where she underwent multiple surgeries and remains in an induced coma, connected to a ventilator. Doctors reported that she will still have to face other surgical interventions, given her delicate condition.
The other three injured in the accident are the woman’s children and her daughter-in-law, who have already been discharged from the hospital.
Five days after the accident, his family pleads for help in finding the person responsible for the collision.
“The person who did this to my wife, if they have a heart, I would deeply appreciate it if they would come forward and take responsibility for what they did,” expressed the victim's husband, Frank Vázquez, in an interview with Telemundo 51. “Right now, she doesn't talk, she doesn't recognize anyone. She's on a ventilator.”
In addition to the anguish caused by the tragedy and the seriousness of the mother’s condition, the Vázquez family also has to face the high costs of medical care. They have therefore sought help to cover hospital expenses and are seeking justice.
"We need the person responsible to come forward and do the right thing," stated a relative of Hortensia to the television channel, while expressing gratitude for any information that could help find the responsible party.
"Today we ask for everyone's solidarity. Not just for my mother, but so that no one else has to endure a pain like this," expressed one of the woman's sons.
His family opened a page on the GoFundMe platform to raise funds to cover medical expenses.
Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade Police continue to investigate the accident and have requested the cooperation of anyone with information about the vehicle involved or its driver.
In Florida, leaving the scene of an accident that results in death or serious injury is a felony of the second degree. This can carry a punishment of up to 15 years in prison or probation, as well as a fine of $10,000.
