The doctor Asiel Pérez Rocillo, one of the health professionals exported by the Cuban regime to Mexico, died “suddenly” in that country on Saturday afternoon, according to the Cuban Embassy.

Pérez Rocillo was a specialist in Family Medicine and provided services at the Xicotepec integral hospital in the state of Puebla, as stated by the diplomatic representation in a brief statement released this Sunday, in which the causes of the doctor's death were not disclosed.

“With deep sorrow, we learned of the sudden passing this afternoon of Dr. Asiel Pérez Rocillo; a Cuban doctor specializing in Family Medicine who was providing services to the Mexican people at the Xicotepec Integrated Hospital in the state of Puebla,” noted in a post on the social media platform X.

According to the statement, the management of the Medical Brigade, the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba (MINSAP), and the embassy made contact "immediately" with the doctor's family on the island and "are taking all the necessary steps to provide the required consular support and facilitate his repatriation."

“His colleagues and our mission extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” concludes the statement.

Pérez Rocillo was part of the 3,101 healthcare professionals from Cuba currently working in Mexico, under the existing agreements between the governments of both countries to send doctors, nurses, and health technicians from the island to Mexican territory.

The hiring of Cuban healthcare personnel has sparked strong criticism due to the shortage of doctors and nurses in Cuba, which has worsened the national health system crisis and directly impacts the population; and the high revenues the regime of the island receives from the export of its services.

The death of Pérez Rocillo adds to the recent passing of two other Cuban doctors who were working outside their country.

On January 4th, Dr. Jorge Luis Dupré Zanetti passed away due to a heart attack. He had been the health director in the municipality of Carrizal, in the state of Miranda, Venezuela, since 2021, as part of the collaboration program between the regimes of both countries.

Four days later, Doctor Santa Gaspar Lewis passed away in Angola, a specialist in Internal Medicine originally from Guantánamo, due to complications arising from malaria. The professional had been practicing in the African country for several years under a personal contract.
