The situation of Cubans in the U.S. has been a topic of debate and concern in recent years, with a significant increase in arrivals by sea from the island, which since 2021 has experienced the worst exodus in its history.
"Today, nine Cuban migrants were taken into custody by the Border Patrol after reaching shore in a makeshift boat in Key West," wrote Jeffrey Dinise, chief of the Border Patrol in the area.
The U.S. government has maintained its policy of detention and deportation for migrants attempting to enter the country illegally, although the context of Cuban migration remains a constant challenge for U.S. authorities.
On January 10th, the USBP also arrested 24 Cubans attempting to illegally enter the country aboard a small vessel near Key West, Florida.
On Thursday, the Coast Guard repatriated 20 rafters and two dogs after intercepting their attempt at illegal migration at sea, as part of the Vigilant Sentry operation at the end of 2024.
The Ministry of the Interior of Cuba (Minint) stated that this was the second repatriation operation of the year. The first operation of 2024 was conducted by the Bahamas on January 4, when 19 rafters were returned to the island.
Frequently asked questions about the migration of Cuban rafters and deportations
What happens to Cuban rafters who arrive in the United States?
When Cuban rafters arrive in the United States, they are intercepted by authorities and face a deportation process. They are processed for return to their country of origin by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Additionally, they are prohibited from re-entering the U.S. legally for five years.
Why do Cubans continue to risk their lives on sea crossings?
The economic crisis and the lack of opportunities in Cuba drive many citizens to seek a better future, despite the risks and restrictive migration policies. Desperation and the absence of legal options to leave the country are key factors motivating Cubans to embark on dangerous maritime journeys.
How many Cuban rafters have been repatriated in 2024?
In 2024, more than 1,300 irregular Cuban migrants have been repatriated from various countries in the region. This figure reflects the intensified interception and repatriation operations by U.S. authorities.
What are the dangers of illegal maritime migration from Cuba?
Illegal maritime migration from Cuba is extremely dangerous due to the precarious conditions of the vessels and the harshness of the sea. In 2024, at least 142 Cuban rafters have lost their lives while attempting to reach the U.S. shores. U.S. authorities emphasize the importance of using legal pathways for immigration.
