After fighting for nearly a month for his life, in the early hours of January 21st, Néstor Gabriel del Río Benavides, a 7-year-old boy who had been hit by a vehicle at the end of December in the municipality of Songo-La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba, passed away, as reported on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

On December 30th, Néstor Gabriel del Río was standing next to another minor in front of the railing of a neighboring house when a vehicle passing through the area accidentally struck them.

According to the same source that reported earlier, the vehicle involved had a steering failure, causing the driver to lose control of the car.

The tragic accident occurred near the La Maya cemetery. The children were on the sidewalk between the Palace of Pioneers and the cemetery.

"There was a family activity nearby, and the children went outside. They were standing in front of the railing when the vehicle hit them. According to what I was told, the car's steering failed, which caused the driver to lose control and run them over against the railing," a relative explained.

After the accident, Néstor Gabriel remained hospitalized for almost a month at the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César Children's Hospital, known as "La Colonia Española."

During that time, blood donations were offered to help the child, a gesture for which the family was deeply grateful.

However, despite the medical efforts and the support received, unfortunately the child passed away at 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Regarding the circumstances of the accident itself, it was previously reported that Gabriel "was in such bad shape that they had to wait for a vital support ambulance to transport him." He had "blood accumulation in the chest and a severely damaged liver."

Regarding the evolution of the other minor involved in the incident, Yosmany Mayeta did not provide updated information on the second minor, whose identity has not been disclosed. It was previously indicated that the other injured child had suffered an open femur fracture.
