Nubia Fagot, a 62-year-old woman from Hialeah, became a millionaire after winning the top prize of five million dollars in the scratch-off game $5,000,000 Crossword Cash, as announced by the Florida Lottery.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Shell gas station located near Northwest 87th Avenue, north of Highway 836, in Doral. Although it was her husband who bought the ticket for 20 dollars, he gifted it to Nubia, who shortly thereafter received confirmation of the jackpot. The couple chose to receive the money in a single payment, amounting to 3,262,138 dollars after taxes.
The news was confirmed by the Florida Lottery district office in Miami, where the woman officially claimed the prize. The establishment that sold the ticket also received a commission of $10,000.
After the unexpected stroke of luck, the couple has changed their lives: they moved to a new house, bought several cars, helped their daughter with an apartment, and even offered financial support to a neighbor, according to local media such as Telemundo 51 and NBC Miami.
Despite their new fortune, neighbors from their old community in Hialeah claim they still see them around the area. “They stayed in Hialeah. I run into them at the corner store buying more lottery tickets,” commented a resident.
The game Crossword Cash, launched by the Florida Lottery, offers instant prizes of up to five million dollars and is part of a series of tickets that represent 74% of the entity's sales in the fiscal year 2023-2024.
Since their inception, scratch-off games have generated over 65.5 billion in prizes and have contributed more than 19.8 billion to the Educational Improvement Trust Fund of the state.
