A serious traffic accident occurred on Sunday night on the San Antonio de los Baños highway, in the province of Artemisa, specifically at the dangerous curve of the bridge located in the area known as the "Novia del Mediodía."
The incident involved a gray vehicle—presumably a Soviet-made Moskvich—which, for reasons still undetermined, crashed violently into a fixed object, causing severe damage to the front bodywork.
As a result, the driver became trapped between the seat and the steering wheel of the car, which required immediate intervention from the firefighters, according to reports from users on social media.
Images shared on the profile of Facebook 'La Tijera' showed rescuers using hydraulic tools to free the driver, whose life was in danger due to the complexity of their entrapment.
Thanks to the quick actions of the Fire Department and the support of neighbors and onlookers who illuminated the scene with their mobile phones, the man was able to be extracted alive from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to a hospital.
Although no official details have been released about the driver's identity or current health status, close sources indicate that he managed to survive the impact. The wrecked vehicle was left with its front end completely destroyed, highlighting the severity of the crash.
The competent authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident. So far, it has not been confirmed whether there was speeding, technical faults, or other associated causes.
The stretch where the accident occurred is known among drivers for its danger, especially at night or in low visibility conditions. In the area, popularly known as Novia del Mediodía, there was a drive-in theater from the 1950s of the same name.
A stretch known for its high danger
The area where the accident occurred is considered one of the most dangerous stretches in western Cuba. It is located on the road connecting Havana to San Antonio de los Baños and has been the scene of multiple serious accidents in recent years.
In May 2024, a collision between a classic car and a tanker truck in that same area left shocking images of the vehicle completely destroyed.
Other recent incidents in nearby areas, such as the accident caused by a pothole in Marianao and a collision between a car and a motorcycle in La Lisa, have once again highlighted the deterioration of road infrastructure and the lack of effective signage.
