A 35-year-old Cuban woman identified as Yailín Torres was brutally murdered in Suriname in front of her three-year-old daughter.
The woman was reportedly killed by a citizen of the Dominican Republic, who later took his own life by hanging.
The victim worked as a cook at a gold mine called Garimbo, where she was found dead.
According to a report on social media by the news portal Reporte Cuba Ya -which claims to have received direct testimonies from the scene- Yailín was not in a romantic relationship with the assailant; rather, he was an acquaintance with whom she had a purely friendly connection.
The crime occurred inside the mining camp where Yailín was cooking.
The most shocking thing is that his daughter, Alejandra—which is the name of the youngest and not the mother, as some profiles are circulating—witnessed the murder.
According to the report, the girl -who was not born in Cuba- is in the custody of local authorities and in a state of high vulnerability.
Alejandra's father also resides in Suriname, but he is in prison.
A paternal uncle is expected to come forward to the authorities to try to assume custody, although for the moment the minor has not been handed over to the friend who lived with the victim.
“They sent me photos and videos of Yailín dead… The girl was inside, she saw everything. Yailín fought for her children, and look what happens to us,” the friend, who is now leading the efforts to arrange for the repatriation of the body, reported through tears.
Yailín also leaves behind a nine-year-old son in Camagüey, Cuba, who lives with his father.
It was also revealed that he has relatives in Santiago de Cuba and a doctor uncle in Brazil, although initially it was not possible to establish contact with them.
The priority at this moment is to ensure Alejandra's well-being and to reach out to more family members who can assist in her protection and in managing the corresponding legal process.
In an update on the case, the mentioned media outlet specified that a cousin of Yailín from Cuba "is in direct contact with the friend who reported the incident."
As of the closing of this report, there are no further details about the unfortunate event.
In recent years, several Cubans have lost their lives in Suriname, a country where an indeterminate community of Cubans resides.
