The U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticized Google this Saturday for excluding Univision from the basic package of YouTube TV, and demanded that the channel be returned to the platform "as a matter of fairness."

In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I hope that Univision, a great and very popular Hispanic network, can return to the amazing Google/YouTube, as it has been removed from their package, which is VERY BAD for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.”

Trump highlighted that Univision “was very good to me with its most watched political special” and asserted that thanks to that coverage he set a “Republican record in Hispanic voting”.

The largest Spanish-language network in the United States accused Google of discrimination following the decision to remove its signal from the standard package of YouTube TV starting September 30, 2025.

The measure requires users to pay 15 additional dollars for a special package in Spanish, bringing the total cost to almost 100 dollars per month.

Univision considers this decision to be a "Hispanic tax" that financially penalizes millions of Latino households who rely on the channel for access to news, entertainment, and sports in their language.

In an open letter, the CEO of TelevisaUnivision, Daniel Alegre, warned that exclusion will negatively impact the Hispanic community, especially during critical events such as:

  • The redistricting of electoral districts in key states such as Texas and California.
  • The gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia.
  • The 2026 midterm elections in Florida, Georgia, and other states.

The company launched a public campaign under the slogan “Do the right thing, Google” to demand the reinstatement of Univision in the basic package and to denounce what it considers an abusive use of market power by the tech giant.

Google's decision has sparked strong criticism from community leaders, the media, and users, who argue that this exclusion limits access to information in Spanish and jeopardizes the democratic participation of a key community in the U.S. political landscape.

The Univision campaign includes full-page ads in newspapers of cities with large Latino populations such as Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas, aimed at publicly pressuring Google to prevent the imposition of an additional economic barrier for Latinos to access information in their language.

The conflict has taken on a greater political dimension with the intervention of President Trump, who sees this dispute as potentially having a negative impact on his party in the upcoming elections.
