The Cuban programmer Elvis Morales Fernández celebrated his official inclusion in the list of contributors for WordPress 6.9 “Gene” this Thursday, a distinction that places him among the developers recognized for their collaboration with the content management system that powers nearly half of the websites on the planet.
"For me, this is not just a professional achievement. It's about remembering where everything started and how," Morales wrote in a post where he shared the official link to the announcement on wordpress.org.
The young man recalled his beginnings in Havana, where he started writing his first code snippets under precarious conditions, without free access to the internet or technological resources.
"Nothing about mobile data, nothing about wifi at home... everything is limited, controlled, and even illegal," he recalled.
Today, after years of effort and self-directed learning, Morales contributes from Seattle, United States, to the development of the most widely used free software in the world.
"Man, look how far we've come," he wrote excitedly.
Her story reflects the talent and perseverance of many young Cubans who, despite the restrictions on the Island, manage to carve a path in the competitive world of global technology.
